THE TRUE BALANCE.–

Two councilmen of New Orleans were one evening in February, 1861, reeling down to the city hall steps discussing politics, as well as their cups and hiccups would permit them. One said solemnly,–

“The South’s true balance must not be overthrown;” to which the other replied,–

“Confound the South’s balance; try to keep your own.”
